Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library

Every Child Ready to Read

The Safford City - Graham County Library has an exciting program series designed to help get "Every Child Ready To Read." Current research shows that children who learn six critical pre-reading skills before they start kindergarten become better readers. Children who do not know these skills when they come to school have a much more difficult time learning to read.

You can learn about the six skills and how to develop them in children from birth to age five @ your library. Each of the "Every Child Ready To Read" programs explains why the skills are so important, demonstrates how to help children learn the skills, provides titles of high-interest books that are age appropriate, and sends you home with early literacy activities to incorporate into your family's daily routine.

Upcoming Programs

For ages 0 to 2 years

January 24th - 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

For ages 2 to 3 years

February 21st - 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

For ages 4 to 5 years

March 21st - 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

All programs will be held in the Early Literacy Room of the library.

FREE childcare provided on site!

There is a program for each of three age groups: birth to two-year-olds, two and three-year-olds, and four and five-year olds. A schedule for upcoming programs appears below. Be sure to download one of the "Every Child Ready To Read" parent guides from the Resources bar on your right and stop by, ask a librarian to help you find just the right books to help your child get ready to read.

Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness is the ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words. It includes the ability to say whether or not two words rhyme, the ability to put two word chunks together to make a word (ti + ger), etc.

Sing songs, play games and share rhymes to help your child play with the smaller sounds in words.

Songs with movement are great for helping children develop early literacy skills.

Repetition strengthens learning patterns in the brain.

Some Fun Songs are:

Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes

If You're Happy and You Know It

Itsy Bitsy Spider

The Grand Ol' Duke of York
